Distaff spinning

11:00     Members of the De Caversham Household – spinning with a distaff

The De Caversham Household is a living history group based in Cardiff. For over fifteen years, we have researched various aspects of 14th Century life, including clothing and textile crafts.

Spinning with a distaff is rarely seen nowadays and many people, even spinners, consider the distaff to be a tool for flax only. However, evidence from pre-Industrial Europe demonstrates that the distaff was used for all types of spinning, including for wool, for many centuries. Members of The De Caversham Household will discuss their research and demonstrate the traditional European distaff spinning methods that they have helped to reconstruct.

14:00     Costume and Textile Society of Wales members’ show and tell.

A chance for members to show what they have being making or collecting.  There will be some ferocious knits and maybe some gentler crafts.
